Very dark brown, almost black, and 174 cm tall, he was nicknamed "The black devil". It was during one of his trips to Italy that he almost died. In March, after a grueling campaign, he was returning by train in a mail car with another trotter, Roc Wilkes. The train was blocked at the border near Mont Blanc, and the temperature dropped below zero by nightfall. Customs officers had sealed the doors of the car, making it impossible to get the two horses out. The ordeal lasted two days. Mr. Alain BLU, his carer, who accompanied TIDALIUM PELO, did everything in his power to keep his spirits up and covered him with his personal belongings. Back in Joinville-le-Pont, ROCK WILKES died and TIDALIUM PELO fainted. His strong constitution allowed him to recover fairly quickly and continue his exploits. In 1971, despite a tendon injury, he finished second in the Prix de Cornulier, then won the Prix d'Amérique.
